A Sweet Victory for The Eggheads in Battle Milk and Honey
Tonight hosted two relatively unsung restaurants, Another Broken Egg in Durham is a breakfast place laden with some seriously seasoned chefs, Team Egg Heads consist of Scott Schabot (formerly of Kamado Grille), Keith Calise (formerly of McDaid's on Hillsboro St.) & Tad Balio (formerly of Ruckus and 18 Seaboard). Robinson Ferry Restaurant in Warrenton, has only been open 7 months but these young, talented chefs aren't afraid to put it out there. Team Garnish Nation consists of Michael Ring (formerly of Warren FoodWorks and The Burger Barn), energetic Chef de Cuisine A.J. Garrelts (former executive chef at a Virginia winery) and David Rose (who formerly lived in Miami, Fla.) brings a Cuban influence to his cooking). Neither team has battled in the Got To Be NC Competition Dining Series but their performance was smooth, organized, focused and well executed.
Pro Judges for the night were Chefs Bill Hartley of the Carolina Inn, Joe Fasy of Hook & Cleaver Market and Phil Platoni of Southminster.
Team Garnish Nation held the lead throughout the dinner but it was the Egghead's dessert that brought them just over the top for the win by less than 3/10s of a point! It was a brutal loss for Garnish Nation but as Jimmy Crippen always says in the Competition Dining world..."One Dish Will Make You Or Break You!". Team Eggheads heads (can we say heads twice in a row?) to the final round going against Team Curt's Cucina.
